Adjusting to school is becoming a major agenda item in many households. However, we should see it as a natural and normal period of adaptation. There is no need to worry, because this is a normal process that all families and children experience.
Think about it; we all like to be in familiar and comfortable environments. Our children feel the same way. At home they are in their own comfort zone, their meals are prepared and their wishes are fulfilled, but when they come to school they are aware of a new order and new rules. This can be a big change for them. At the same time, seeing that they are not only themselves, but that they are surrounded by 10-15 friends with similar aspirations and expectations is an important step in developing their perception of the world.
When your children start school for the first time, they observe for the first week or two to get used to the new environment. Then, as they become aware of this new order, they are likely to react, sometimes objectionably. However, this behavior is perfectly normal and part of the adaptation process.
At this point, you should remember that your role as a parent is very important. Since children are not yet experienced enough in regulating their emotions, they expect a consistent and supportive attitude from you. It is very helpful to remind them that their school is a safe and ideal environment for learning and to give them consistent messages that this order will continue.
What Can You Do as a Parent?
Be Consistent “School is a safe and healthy place for you. You are getting a good education there and you are having a lot of fun.”
Show Your Support: Be sensitive and accepting of the emotional difficulties your children are experiencing. Make them feel that you understand.
Collaborate with the School and Educators: Stay in touch with school staff, ask questions about your child’s adaptation process and develop solutions together.
Be Patient: Remember that this process will take time. Each child may adapt at a different pace.
Remember that getting used to school is a very important step in your child’s individual development.
You are his biggest supporter in this journey.
